Sadyra wasn’t sure how long she sat slumped against the wall but as her senses came back to her in a moment of lucidity, she realized that the sailor she had taken down no longer lay by her feet. Looking around, most of the people were gone and the noise in the great room had diminished to casual conversation.

Wood scraped across the floor near the bar. The skinny man with the apron righted an upturned stool and examined it. Shaking his head, he tossed it into a growing pile of broken furniture in the middle of the floor.

The enormity of what had transpired weighed on her. Because of her actions, the interior of the Witch’s Cauldron had been sacked. Several people sat on benches nursing bruises and cuts. Frenza and her workmates were busy picking up discarded cutlery and earthenware; sweeping shattered debris and righting tables.

Sadyra struggled to hold onto consciousness. The scene unfolding in the room spun in lazy circles before her eyes. The more she watched, the more she felt like throwing up. As her eyes closed, she thought she saw one of the barmaids watching her. Frenza put aside her broom and came her way.

The next thing Sadyra remembered was a soft voice calling her name—cold fingers holding her face.

“She’ll be alright. Let her sleep it off,” a male’s deep voice sounded from somewhere nearby. “I’ll take her from here.”

A thick arm slid behind her neck and another collected her legs together. She had the sensation of being lifted. Her head lolled to one side and a heavy musk scent filled her nostrils, but she didn’t have the wherewithal to open her eyes and see who had her in his arms.

Heavy boots trod across hardwood flooring. Hinges squealed and a blast of cold air hit her—a welcome relief to the heat of the bar.
